Summary

WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY IRVINE WELSH

Dorian is a good-natured young man until he discovers the power of his own exceptional beauty。 As he gradually sinks deep into a frivolous, glamorous world of selfish luxury, he apparently remains physically unchanged by the stresses of his corrupt lifestyle and untouched by age。 But up in his attic, hidden behind a curtain, his portrait tells a different story。。。

Un gran clásico; que es muy de esta época, sin duda debe ser leído más de una vez en la vida; me encanta el esteticismo de Wilde。

I’d like to meet the person who gaslit the entire literary world into thinking this was a masterpiece。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I can’t believe I’ve never read this。 I’m about 2/3 the way through and it’s a bit of a slog at some places, Dorian is an asshole, everyone is really, but overall this was a fun read and kept me interested。

Poco más que añadir sobre este libro, es la segunda vez que lo leo y se reafirma como uno de mis clásicos favoritos。

a cautionary tale regarding the negative consequences of influence and the superficiality of society。

Fantastic book。 Really a very interesting plot idea, and has some real philosophical concepts to ponder。 I absolutely love reading about Sir Henry’s opinions- whether I agree with them or not- and would be quite happy to read a book of just his rants on its own。 Very interesting the whole way through, one of my favourites! I would definitely recommend it。

I finally encouraged myself to read yet another classic despite my bad experience with The Great Gatsby (but that’s a whole other conversation); and I must say that I am very happy I read it。 This brilliant and fascinating book had me gripped from the beginning with its exquisite writing style。 The quotes in this book made my reading pace five times slower as they really made me think a lot。 It had an amazing balance between being a harder book (language wise) and still not being hard to underst I finally encouraged myself to read yet another classic despite my bad experience with The Great Gatsby (but that’s a whole other conversation); and I must say that I am very happy I read it。 This brilliant and fascinating book had me gripped from the beginning with its exquisite writing style。 The quotes in this book made my reading pace five times slower as they really made me think a lot。 It had an amazing balance between being a harder book (language wise) and still not being hard to understand。In my opinion it was a bit predictable and had a bit unnecessary details at some points, but other than that it was an absolute amazing book。 。。。more

This was a short book with an interesting, thought-provoking plot which kept me motivated enough to keep reading。 However, it had multiple shortcomings that prevent me from giving it five stars。Several chapters are nothing but philosophical conversations between the extremely cynical, sexist Lord Henry and some one-note forgotten character。 I didn't know quite what to make of Lord Henry。 It seems that, on some level, Oscar Wilde is aware that Henry's views are distasteful and he's supposed to be This was a short book with an interesting, thought-provoking plot which kept me motivated enough to keep reading。 However, it had multiple shortcomings that prevent me from giving it five stars。Several chapters are nothing but philosophical conversations between the extremely cynical, sexist Lord Henry and some one-note forgotten character。 I didn't know quite what to make of Lord Henry。 It seems that, on some level, Oscar Wilde is aware that Henry's views are distasteful and he's supposed to be a poor influence on young Dorian。 However, Henry doesn't change throughout the course of the novel, and his reactions to everything are almost uniformly indifferent。 This made him irritating to read about, and not in a love-to-hate sort of way either。Someone also needs to teach Lord Henry that correlation does not equal causation。 If a woman does something - literally anything - then according to him, that action is particular to her sex。 Lord Henry is absolutely obsessed with making fun of women and "figuring them out," and you can tell he considers himself an expert on the subject, despite never having been a woman himself。 The constant misogyny pervading the book (and occasionally, anti-Semitism) was distracting and didn't seem to serve any purpose, and if it did, I have yet to learn what that purpose was。Another drawback to the constant philosophizing is that I don't much care for Oscar Wilde's insights。 It was very rare that any of his opinions touched a cord with me, and what's ironic is that I thought the actual plot of the book (the picture of Dorian Gray) was far more compelling。 I had several theories: Christ metaphor, Rapunzel parallel, demonic possession。 It needed more development, though; we mostly hear about Dorian's degradation rather than see it。 Basically, this book needed more plot and less random unrelated conversations。 。。。more

It took me quite a while to read this cause i was in a slump so i guess I didn’t enjoy it as much as i would if i had read it in another time so it was a right book wrong time situation but overall despite the fact that I’m nit good with classics i really like the journey with these characters。 “What of Art?” she asked。“It is a malady”“Love?”"An illusion。”“Religion?”"The fashionable substitute for Belief。”“You are a sceptic。”“Never! The Picture of Dorian Gray is nothing short of perfection。 It is absolutely everything you could ever want in a book。 Dorian, Henry, and Basil are an unforgettable trio。 The characters are unmistakably queer, a wonderful thing coming from Oscar Wilde。 It is a must read for everyone, especially those seeking books with good LGBTQ+ representation。

A thought experiment in which one trades one’s youth for their soul, all while pontificating on art and beauty with aristocrats。Characters are despicable but maybe that's the point—a scathing review of nineteenth-century impulsive, amoral, mutually-corrupting, vain, hedonist men。 A thought experiment in which one trades one’s youth for their soul, all while pontificating on art and beauty with aristocrats。Characters are despicable but maybe that's the point—a scathing review of nineteenth-century impulsive, amoral, mutually-corrupting, vain, hedonist men。 。。。more

I won't try to give any kind of deep, thoughtful review here。 I figure a classic like this probably has so many options for better written and more deeply meaningful reviews of this book than I can give you。 That said, from an enjoyment standpoint alone, I really liked this! I'm not the biggest classics gal typically, but I have found a few fun ones in the past。 The Picture of Dorian Gray has now joined those exclusive few。 The story itself kept my interest and the pacing was decent。 I didn't th I won't try to give any kind of deep, thoughtful review here。 I figure a classic like this probably has so many options for better written and more deeply meaningful reviews of this book than I can give you。 That said, from an enjoyment standpoint alone, I really liked this! Rating: 3。5Tbh it's beautiful, but I'm not going to pretend that I understand the references and I didn't get bored and sleepy at times。 It was very slowww, it didn't show the picture beginning to change till 100 pages in。 I think I dreaded continuing during chapter 10-11, it got better after though (Dorian got a little 😳) Maybe I could reread in the future, maybe it's just not for me, maybe I got used to contemporary fiction。 I loved the concept and I would love to read a modern take/retelling Rating: 3。5Tbh it's beautiful, but I'm not going to pretend that I understand the references and I didn't get bored and sleepy at times。 It was very slowww, it didn't show the picture beginning to change till 100 pages in。 I think I dreaded continuing during chapter 10-11, it got better after though (Dorian got a little 😳) Maybe I could reread in the future, maybe it's just not for me, maybe I got used to contemporary fiction。 I loved the concept and I would love to read a modern take/retelling on this book。 Speaking of which, I should search some up。I found Harry's philosophy interesting but a bit tedious to get through。 I enjoyed it but occasionally dreaded reading this。 I could not dnf this because I have to finish something once I started it and sayang ung physical copy 😭😭Anyhow, I can now watch the movie HUEHEUEHUEHEUEH 😈😈 。。。more

I have never read something so enthralling。For the first chapters the characters life is painted in such a marvelous way, with very fine detail, bringing forth all their upcoming, their current life。 Every little detail was so magically described。 It is at chapter 11 when you can feel that something is going on, something shifted。 The author went on the whole chapter talking about world wonders, in my opinion not in such a clear way, I really had to push myself to get through it。 He wrote painst I have never read something so enthralling。For the first chapters the characters life is painted in such a marvelous way, with very fine detail, bringing forth all their upcoming, their current life。 Every little detail was so magically described。 It is at chapter 11 when you can feel that something is going on, something shifted。 The author went on the whole chapter talking about world wonders, in my opinion not in such a clear way, I really had to push myself to get through it。 He wrote painstakingly of every little detail about the most unrelated things, I could actually feel the turmoil happening inside the main character。 But I feel like this was a test to get through to the best parts of the book。 After this chapter, every page something shocking happened, plot twist after plot twist, none were rushed, everything perfectly placed and tied together for an ending that made so much sense。 I will read other books after this that perhaps will be of better content, but this surely has left an imaginable mark。 。。。more

The Picture of Dorian Gray is one of those books a person simply ought to read in their lifetime。 The premise is simple enough, and the novel itself allows the reader to think of humanity's propensity for sin and the general darkness of the human soul。 In practice, the novel drags at times and is, as expected, terribly predictable。 Still, being short in length and worth the time it takes to read, it isn't a novel you would regret reading。 The Picture of Dorian Gray is one of those books a person simply ought to read in their lifetime。 The premise is simple enough, and the novel itself allows the reader to think of humanity's propensity for sin and the general darkness of the human soul。 In practice, the novel drags at times and is, as expected, terribly predictable。 Still, being short in length and worth the time it takes to read, it isn't a novel you would regret reading。 。。。more
